The Druids often practised their rites in nature, and in particular, under the canopy of oak groves. The name Druid may itself come from the Celt meaning ‘knowledge of the oak tree’. Known as Darach in Gaelic, it can be found in many place names in Scotland, including Glac Daraich (oak valley or hollow) in Glen Affric.
Oak symbolises strength, endurance, power and ancient wisdom. The oak tree’s strong roots penetrate deeply into the earth, anchoring it firmly in place. Like the backbone of the earth, its trunk rises tall and proud, branching out into a canopy of leaves that provide shelter and protection to all those beneath it. In many cultures, the oak tree is seen as a symbol of power and authority and is associated with gods and goddesses of thunder, lightning, and fertility.
This little leaf was one I found in the woods behind the house. What I realised is that each leaf isn’t a perfect shape, or even a replica of the next. They share the same overall shape and pattern, but the leaf lobules vary in size and shape, and aren’t actually regular, as often depicted. So I traced around this one, transferred to copper, and cut it out with a saw. Then textured and shaped it. It’s not the usual perfect ‘oak leaf’, but it is the real shape of an actual oak leaf.
