Is Boho Silver sea glass memorial jewellery for me?

At Boho Silver, we predominantly make non memorial jewellery, but will take on memorial pieces on a case by case basis. We think it is extremely important that you love the style and feel of our jewellery, and favour an organic approach to design. We want the ‘fit’ to be just right, and that is when the magic happens.

We do not approach ashes jewellery with a white coat and surgical gloves. Instead, we chat away, welcome the presence and respect the energy of the person we are working with. We want to feel and capture that energy in the best way we know how; silversmithing.

At Boho Silver we create ocean inspired organic designs, each piece handmade and a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery.

How long will it take?

Ashes to sea glass memorial jewellery will take a minimum of 8 weeks, and actual completion will vary depending on how busy we are. We won’t rush memorial jewellery - the mood and process should never feel hurried or pressured. It happens in our quieter moments, when the mood feels right.

How do we go about it?

Communication is generally via email or messenger. Once we’ve had a chat and decided it’s a good fit for both parties, we will talk about the nature and essence of the person, and what you imagine for them. If a ring is wanted we will send out an adjustable ring sizer to ensure the correct size. We will ask for you to send a small resealable pouch of ash, perhaps a teaspoon worth.

Materials?

We work with sustainable recycled sterling silver and hand-collected Scottish sea glass. We can use your sea glass if it has special significance to you. We can also incorporate small gold accents into the design.

Cost?

Prices start at around £260, and most often do not exceed £800

What can you make?
Rings and necklaces are our most popular designs, but bangles or bracelets are also possible.

Scattering the remaining ashes in Scotland?

If you would like any remaining ashes scattered in Scotland, we can do this locally, near Loch Lomond, as a complimentary option. If you would like the remaining ashes scattered in a specific location in Scotland, we can do so if our time and costs are covered - we will supply a GPS code so that the exact location can always be found in the future. This is a lovely option for those with a loved one with a Scottish heritage. Otherwise we can return any unused ashes via post.

I was aware of memorial ashes jewellery but it wasn't until I saw a post on the Boho Silver FB page that I realised I could get a bespoke piece. The post showed a beautiful memorial ring that had been made for someone. The design was the kind of style I like so I sent a message to Elizabeth at Boho Silver and asked if she could make me a memorial ring for my late sister and if it could hold some of her ashes.

I wanted a piece of jewellery that was designed just for me that would help to preserve the memory of my beloved sister.

Elizabeth agreed and asked lots of questions about my sister so that the design would not just be to my taste but would also reflect my sister's personality. Elizabeth was so kind and caring throughout the whole process and would send me pictures of her progress.

The ring that Elizabeth created for me is absolutely stunning and I know that my sister would have loved it.

I get great comfort from wearing it and I'm so pleased I spotted that post on the Boho Silver Facebook page.

I had thought about getting ashes jewellery done, but wasn't sure, and never liked the dull style of designs that I found online, so was really pleased when a friend came across Boho Silver and sent me the link. Their jewellery is unlike anything I've ever seen, and is just the sort of boho style that I like. I contacted Boho Silver and they were very open and honest about what they could do for me, and I really liked that they approached things in a really open way and with a sense of humour. They make the jewellery around the piece of sea glass, and how it turns out after the ashes are inside, so I pretty much left them to it with just a few ideas on things I liked. It took a while to get my ring back, as they work around their usual business, but I was blown away by what they had made. It's just totally different from other stuff I've seen online, and I absolutely love my jewellery. To have the ashes held in something so lovely is perfect, and nobody guesses it is 'ashes' jewellery, which is even better as I like to keep it as my secret, and I don't want to have the discussion that wearing obvious memorial jewellery might bring.

Excited to say that our most recent collection is in the capable hands of @rinna_photography , with @attackkats the hardy model who frolics in the sea and leaps around the sand on a chilly Highland beach! These are some pics from the last photoshoot, and we are more than a little excited to see what they do for the Storm Collection. The colour of storm clouds. I’m making a few pairs of these Kyanite earrings, and I’ve got to say I just loveeeee them. I’ve kept them a wearable length for most folk, with the faceted stone to add a bit of sparkle. The square cut gives them a contemporary edge I think, and is offset by the swirling cloud of silver above. But that colour 🙌. On my ‘to do’ list today. I love the simple Moon & Mermaid Tears necklace (a best seller), but soldering the little jump ring through the sea glass is tricksy, with some cracking with the heat if you’re not super careful 🤦‍♀️, so I avoid doing. But I’m resolved to get it done; I have, my moons, and the drilled glass, and it’s time to replenish the stock!! Wish me luck! The colour of kyanite, for me, is so evocative of coastal storm colours. Expect to see more 👀. Arisaig Limpet with a twinkling London blue topaz. *Sold, but another has been made if you’re quick!* This limpet shell was found on an Arisaig beach and cast in Sterling silver. Life before being forever captured in silver involved living on bare rocks for up to 16 years. He would have moved around during the first few years of life, then settled in one home for the remainder of his life. So he’s a truly local Highland limpet! Jewellery Soldering Station This is our soldering ‘set up’. It’s a standing station, and definitely isn’t ‘Insta pretty’ but is a practical part of our workspace. Scarlett moves to Durham this Saturday 😱! It’s been pedal-to-the-metal in terms of trying to get jewellery made, work on commissions, as well as sort out admin for both the business and Uni. All of this in the midst of mounting anxiety and mounting piles of homewares and boxes all over the house 🤦‍♀️. While I don’t like Amazon, they are useful : kettle ☑️ toaster ☑️ under bed storage ☑️ miscellaneous £££ of ‘stuff’ ☑️. Suffice to say, it’s a bit of a stressy week at Boho HQ, but once the move is done, I’m sure nerves will subside and it will be wonderful for Scarlett ✨✨. Scarlett will still very much be dipping in and out creatively at Boho as her diary allows - she has a Masters degree to fund after all 🙌. She’s made some fabulous designs for the Storm collection. STORM LOVERS This post is for you if you love our more organic, wild and unique designs. Traditionally a jewellery ‘collection’ has a central design feature throughout. As usual, we don’t follow the herd and instead have the ubiquitous staple of the ocean and seascape as a central tenant to our designs, but indulge a feeling, or moment of beauty, when we design a collection. On this occasion it is the storm at sea. The elements rolling in from the sea, how the colours darken and shift with the storm, the turbulent seas and the absolute surrender to the power of the ocean. What to expect? Love me a jellyfish! 🪼 Less so when I’m swimming like a selkie around Arisaig and feel the delicate brush of my loose hair strands across my face and neck. As I try to sweep them away with my hand I discover these are in fact the long trailing tentacles of a Lion’s Mane jellyfish. Also known as ‘hair jellyfish’. I have a few other names I made up on the spot! Boy did it sting. Lasted a good 36hrs. It’s how I imagine a Botox treatment might feel 🤣. I was all stinging and tight. But this was a free treatment courtesy of Mother Nature. Apparently pee is supposed to relieve the pain, but I didn’t go down that route 🤦‍♀️🤣. Some remedies are best left untried! The @mcs_uk are currently running a survey, so if you spot a jellyfish, please go check out the survey on their website. I’ll be reporting my experience to them and the coastal police 😆. WHO ARE WE? With a wee surge in new followers we thought it’s time to reintroduce ourselves. We are Elizabeth & Scarlett - a mother and daughter duo who love creating the jewellery you see here. We are based near Loch Lomond in Scotland, and take our van ‘Lil’ to search the Scottish coastline for sea glass to incorporate into our designs. We love the sea, the elements, the rugged seascape and folklore tales of Scotland. These aspects of nature and storytelling are woven into our organic designs. ✨✨Back in 2017 I was an editor and copywriter, and Scarlett was emerging from school, somewhat burnt out and mentally struggling. A potentially life threatening mental illness changed everything. After a move to Uni in Aberdeen, which quickly became untenable, walking on the beach there and collecting sea glass became our way to calm a troubled brain and was the best therapy available to us. With jars full of sea glass, and me having a distant memory of having done some basic silversmithing classes at night school some 25 years before, the first item of sea glass jewellery was made in 2018. As Scarlett’s recovery progressed, it did so hand-in-hand with the micro business we started together - Boho Silver. The jewellery making has been a focus, a creative outlet and a healing journey for us both as individuals, and for our relationship (which had suffered greatly). We continue to progress and develop, and I think our designs have evolved with our healing. We appreciate just how important this wee business is and has been. Torn from my clutches by a customer who loves the ring as much as I do! This baby fits my finger and everything, but we’d be even poorer than we are if we kept all the pieces we love. I’m delighted she’s found a perfect new owner. This organic barnacle and tideline inspired ring was made using an ancient Japanese lost wax technique called Mitsuro hikime (details on the process in yesterdays post). Making other jewellery today took a back seat this afternoon as I battled the password conundrum of a replacement iPhone. I set it up automatically from my iPad but turns out that is linked to a different one of my emails and I cannot access the passwords stored on the original phone. The result is I can’t access iCloud etc to download Apps. I am currently staring at a black screen that keeps saying ‘hola’ in pretty script and in 24 different languages. EXPLORING NEW CREATIVE DESIGNS This is when we are at our best, experimenting and getting lost in the process of creating freely. On the bench here we have a ring made using a Japanese lost wax technique that has existed for 1300 years, called Mitsuro Hikime. Mitsu (honey), ro (wax), hiki (drawing), me (texture). The wax blend is a combination of pine resin and beeswax. This technique has allowed us to infuse the ring with the organic texture and forms that are a part of a seascape; there is a wonderful depth and movement to the piece. And of course, it is a one-of-a-kind design. This is my first piece, and I love working with the medium. The shoreline presents a rich source of inspiration, from basalt rock formations, pebbles worked smooth by the sea and the diversity of shape, colour and texture that are integral to the shells and uninhabited homes of sea creatures. We often refer to these textures snd try to j corporate them into our jewellery work. As an aside..Barnacles start cute, but notice how elongated they become as they grow. How many of us struggle with not feeling we are good enough; have that real fear of making mistakes, being judged and found to be lacking? Scarlett starts a new chapter in Durham come 23rd September, where she will be studying for her Masters in English Literary Studies. Exciting times, with a new place to explore and friendships to be made. I’m so very happy she’s finding her wings 🩵. She’s managed to find a little studio/room within a student village, so hopefully she meets some nice folk. And they have a surf club which she’s keen to try. It does mean we are super busy right now, trying to get a collection together before she goes! But ultimately we can only do what we can, so whatever we manage in the time we have, that will be ‘the collection’ 🤦‍♀️🤣! It’s an inexpensive & eco friendly way to create a ‘heat sink’ when working with metal of different densities. Keeping it boho, beachy & simple we have now made some cowrie shells hanging on endless recycled sterling silver hoops. These are great to wear, and make a cool and alternative gift idea (🎄 just saying 👀). Cowries have been valued in many ancient cultures as currency, adornment and representative of the power and strength of the female. Sea glass hunting can be very hit and miss. Do you have a go-to beach? Is it harder to find sea glass now? Our jewellery may use glass ‘trash’, but trust us when we say it takes a lot of exploration, loads of time and a very keen eye. It’s definitely getting harder to find. And not all sea glass is equal in terms of being able to make jewellery; a lot of sea glass found hasn’t been ‘cooked’ long enough, and is still angular and smooth. Even the nuggets that are rounder and frosted aren’t always of a jewellery quality. Contrary to what you might expect, gemstones would often be cheaper and easier, and are certainly of calibrated shapes and sizes so much easier to work with! But it’s the uniqueness that makes sea glass special. On our most recent foray we did okay, but we couldn’t find many blues at all. We left with the sun splitting the sky, but had to sit in the car waiting for the the heavy downpours to pass (last clip). Want to go search for sea glass? Is it Autumn? Have I fallen into a deep sleep and skipped a month? I didn’t order this, and I’d like to return it! *SEA POTTERY LOVE* These two pieces of gorgeous stoneware sea pottery were found a few years back on Highland beaches, and we squirrelled them away in one of the many, many containers secreted around the house. And promptly forgot about them. We’ve rediscovered them and we think the inky abstract design, and the grey against the white make for rather lovely contemporary pendants. They are both beautifully tactile, and the grey has the design on both sides. Attached with a length of grey faux suede cord so you can adjust to any length. While it might be hard for some to understand the lure of mermaiding, the overarching desire seems to be to feel the freedom the water offers. Particularly with a gorgeous, flowing mermaid tail! The series certainly has a few colourful ‘characters’, but it comes across as a very inclusive community, with colour, gender & size represented. The sweetest moment was to watch the original performance mermaids (now in their 70’s) having a last opportunity to mermaid. The older bodies lost their physical impediments as soon as they entered the water, and had amazing grace and beauty within the weightless environment. It was lovely to watch. Mermaid Life in the Highlands 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 True to my word in a recent post about grabbing every opportunity to escape, I saw the weather 🌞, packed the van and headed north on Thursday. Scarlett hastily stuffed everything in a rucksack and drove up at 5am the following morning - she couldn’t resist 😂. We get to call this ‘work’ since we did a bit of mermaiding on pristine beaches adorned in jewellery for photos (we will be posting the results shortly - we are quite pleased with them). Oh, the hardship I tell you🌞🌊🤣! But mainly we swam in the sea, stared out to sea, kayaked, seal & sea otter watched then walked to the pub. We’ve tried to capture the organic patterns in this gorgeous one-of-a-kind necklace. On this occasion we used Argentium silver. This is a type of sterling silver that has a slightly higher silver content (96%). Usually silver is alloyed with just copper, but this uses germanium which results in a brighter finish that is less likely to tarnish. 🌞These long sunny days make me itch to fill them with activities 🌞 I have ‘the fear’ of the return to long dark nights, knowing the longest day is approaching, and want these days of warmth and birdsong brimming with little outings and adventures. So we’ve both been doing fun things. Scarlett visited Cornwall, then returned to try her hand at scuba diving near Oban. Friends and myself took the train to the remote train station Corrour (the one in Trainspotting) to have a bimble around Loch Ossian and then up a wee munro. Then some more attempts at hill training this week. Issues with my knee have prevented me from doing training for an ultramarathon planned for August, but I’ve discovered running poles which at least allow me to (albeit slowly) get some hill miles in. It’s not looking good to get 42 mile fit in a few weeks to be honest! But, the reality is I’m very fortunate to be able to do what I can do. 🌸SEA PINKS🌸 We always look to nature when we design, and today’s earrings were inspired by the crowns of glorious 'sea pinks' or 'sea thrift' that grows in swathes close to, and on rocky outcrops, on beaches in the West Highlands of Scotland in Spring. WANT TO SWIM WITH MERMAIDS? The @1000mermaids project is an EcoArt installation whose goal is to create 1000 mermaid sculptures made from ocean-friendly concrete that will sustain coral reef nurseries. This will help restore existing coral reefs and create new ones. Essential marine ecosystems, coral reefs are often called the "rainforests of the sea" due to the diversity of life they can support. Around 25% of the ocean's fish dependent upon healthy reefs to use as shelter, find food, reproduce, and rear their young amongst the gnarled crannies. However, 75% of the world’s coral reefs are currently threatened, and by 2030 this will be 90%, with the greatest global threat being climate change. With World Ocean Day on Thursday, we wanted to raise awareness of this amazing project. Folklore Thursday Arisaig blushes pink at this time of the year with beautiful sea pinks upon every rocky outcrop. But the hills, glens & shoreline around the area hosts a very different spectral sight from time to time, with a mournful howl heard catching the breeze. The Grey Dog of Meoble, stalks the area, including the Rhu peninsula, lamenting the loss of her master. She is known to appear to members of Clan MacDonald when approaching death. Scarlett did hear a howl when camping in the area, but she was clinging to the hope that it was the local husky 👀! The Birth of Aphrodite Heck, you know we are partial to a good dollop of folklore to inspire our designs. After a recent trip to Rhodes and visiting the ancient temple of Aphrodite this made an appearance. The goddess of love, lust, beauty, pleasure, passion & procreation; in fact, the original wild woman. She was marine birthed from the severed genitals of primordial god Ouranos (careful how you annunciate that 🙈🤣). Our Aphrodite talisman is represented with a small pink nugget of sea glass. She is formed from sea foam and drawn to shore on a clam shell. The necklace has a froth of sea foam bubbles surrounding the sea glass, and further sea foam bubbles at the back, within the clam shell itself. Lots of detailing. ASHES IN SEA GLASS 💙 We were honoured to be asked to incorporate the ashes of a much loved sister in a nugget of sea glass. She wanted something quite different, a piece of jewellery to treasure that would capture something of her sister’s free spirit and love of the sea. The wide band is textured to be reminiscent of the sand as the tide recedes. Thank you for trusting us with your sister. While working with the ashes, I experienced a strong perfume around me. I described it as quite floral, but with a woody/tobacco undertone and some sort of rose, but not like traditional rose scents. Apparently it described exactly the scent her sister wore. A galaxy of stars It is an honour to be trusted with the ashes of a loved one. I have just captured this beautiful soul in sea glass, and you can see that it looks like a little galaxy of stars. So special. While forming this I caught an aroma around me of a very specific perfume (I’m a bit witchy that way); woody & botanical,with perhaps a hint of tuberose. One doesn’t really get random perfume scents at the bench! It seems I described exactly the perfume worn by this beautiful lady. I like to think the energy is still around and they make themselves present if you are open to it. Things don’t always go to plan! After the reel from yesterday I tried to finish off setting the sea glass. Unfortunately the fine silver bezel folded into the topography of the sea glass (normal), but the more I tried to make it look better, the worse it became. Ragged edges and a messy finish. So, I had to start again. This is the revamped Kelpie with a different bezel type. Kelpie pendant - process. Some of the processes after the silversmithing is done. Once the designing, forming and soldering is done, a lot of time is spent finishing the piece. That includes filing the silver, applying patina, sanding, polishing and setting the sea glass itself. As the sea glass is never ‘perfect’ in shape, the bezel around the glass shows the little natural indentations etc, which you don’t get with a lapidary cut gemstone. This is much accelerated to give you an idea. Actually setting the sea glass was difficult to film, but takes lots of time and patience. Wearable Art - Sculptural Coral Ring Is jewellery art? What constitutes art? Art is something that is created with imagination and skill; that is beautiful, or that expresses important ideas or feelings. The medium used is irrelevant. I think there can be terrible snobbery that a painting is what art ‘is’. Anything other than a painting is relegated to the subset of a ‘craft’ item. As though somehow lesser than a painting. Pfft, having been teased with the old ‘Spring is just around the corner’ feeling; endless blue skies, crisp days and bright sunshine here in Scotland, the rug has been firmly pulled. Grey skies, torrential rain, sleet and with promised minus temperatures overnight to turn all that wet ground to sheet ice. To cap it all we ran out of oil for the heating at the weekend, so our old stone cottage is like Siberia. I did brave a short run earlier, and retuned drookit, with wet pants, for my effort. Social media is happening from my makeshift office now (aka my bed, with the electric blanket on!). No jewellery has been made on the basis I don’t want frostbite (no drama here 😂). Instead, I bring you the colours of the sea with the unique Sea Acorn necklace *SOLD* . I don’t think such an ocean treasure exists, but the molten silver formed around the sea glass in what I think looks a bit like an acorn. I rather like the effect. Swipe to see pics. Sunday Experimentation What do you think of the form and texture on this? Sometimes, with silver sheet and wire, I just can’t get the really organic finish I’d like for my designs. I want ocean movement, and the world beneath the waves. This is my first try with hard wax that you carve into your design. Then you can use an ancient technique called ‘lost wax casting’ to cast the design in the metal of your choice. And I’d love to embed a few sparking sapphires or diamonds in the design 🤩💛. Carving in 3D is much harder said than done I confess. But I’ve taken to using a candle flame rather than the tools I got with the kit (Xmas pressie to self, but only now I’m away for a few days break did I think to bring it with me for a play). That said, I’ve not read the instructions or consulted YouTube - straight in with my usual ‘I wonder what happens if’ approach 😂. Would you like to see designs like this come together in silver (or gold or bronze 🤔) and be available? The forgotten pieces on the website, in case you missed them. Or, more likely, we forgot to post them 😬. In fact, DM re the apatite/kyanite earrings as they haven’t even been uploaded 🤦‍♀️😂. Oops. Don’t you forget about them ☝🏼. It’s been a tough day today as my old mare, aged 27, is very poorly. Temperature of 40.5 degrees. We can’t find the cause but likely viral or bacterial infection, so she’s had painkillers,anti inflammatories, antibiotics and steroids injected as a blanket emergency treatment. 🤞🏼 she pulls through - she’s a tough old girl, but was so listless and unsteady on her feet today. It’s so hard to watch the pets we love, little or large, diminish with age. If things don’t improve significantly for her, I’ll need to take the right decision by her, and when that day comes I’ll be by her side to the end. We owe our animals that, don’t you think?
